About the Course

Perioperative Nursing

Perioperative nursing encompasses patients needing a surgical or any invasive approach. They assist in the planning, implementation, and evaluation phases and in felt care coordination should be done with the patient and family and other clinicians actively involved in the patient's care.

This course enables students to gain initial knowledge on perioperative nursing and prepares them for more advanced training aimed for them to function as a perioperative nurse who delivers care within the nursing process to clients before, during, and after surgical and invasive procedures in various healthcare institutions like hospitals, day surgery centers and endoscopy suites.

One of the major highlights of this course is the emphasis on the advocacy, assurance, quality, and safety of care to clients who are not able to express themselves throughout the surgical process using a person-centered approach to nursing.

Students will have to take part in interactive discussions in the classroom or forums related for particular case studies towards aiding assimilation of theoretical concepts of the course using evidence based approach in nursing process of pre operative, intra operative and post operative nursing care to a surgical patient.

The Graduate Certificate in Advanced Nursing also enables students to broaden their career options further.

Upon completion of the module, students will be able to:
Define the scope and concepts within the domain of Perioperative nursing in relation to nursing intervention and management at the various levels of healthcare delivery.

Demonstrate and apply the principles of evidence-based and holistic nursing intervention and assessment for client’s preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases of care.

Analyze the team collaboration dynamics in addressing a client’s unique immediate person-centered needs preoperatively, intraoperatively, and postoperatively.

Analyze the relevance of a person-centred care approach towards ethical-medico legal considerations during operative care with regard to people from diverse cultures including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients.
